The Many Benefits of Yoga

Wednesday, 18 April 2012

Ask anyone who loves yoga and they’re sure to tell you it’s relaxing, stress-reducing, and lots of fun, too. After all, where else can you engage in an energizing activity that’s physical, mental and spiritual—and also offers so many health benefits?

Dina Murillo, Spectrum Goleta general manager, says there are core benefits that those who have practiced yoga over the past 5,000 years have come to value:

Energy: A regular yoga practice provides consistent energy. In fact, most yogis state that when you perform yoga correctly, you will feel energized rather than tired after your yoga session.

Weight: Many yoga postures create compression on certain organs of the body. In return you can regulate your weight by increasing your metabolic rate. Additionally, stretching the muscles lengthwise helps to reduce the amount of cellulite that can build around muscles.

Sleep: Few other exercises offer the mind-body connection that yoga does. As you match your controlled breathing with the movements of your body, you retrain your mind to find that place of calm and peace that long-time yogis experience.

Endurance: By lowering your resting heart rate and blood pressure through the breath, yoga enhances your overall endurance.

Ideally, Dina says, your weekly workout routine will focus on a combination of cardio, strength training and yoga. That’s why yoga classes at Spectrum Club are such a great value.

“For less than the cost of a membership at many yoga studios, Spectrum members can choose from a selection of studio-quality yoga classes—and also enjoy all of the equipment, amenities, and other group fitness classes the club offers,” Dina explains.

It’s a great way to balance your mind-body-spirit—and your finances.
